About the Journal

1. Focus and Scope

Journal of Islamic Education Review (JIER) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to publishing critical inquiries, comprehensive literature reviews, and rigorous empirical research on the evolving landscape of Islamic education. The journal serves as a strategic scholarly platform for academics, researchers, and practitioners to disseminate innovative insights and transformative solutions that enhance the quality, relevance, and future direction of Islamic education worldwide.

We welcome original submissions that fall within (but are not limited to) the following thematic areas:

Curriculum Development & Pedagogical Advancements: Innovative teaching methodologies, curriculum design, active learning, and empathetic or compassionate pedagogy within Islamic contexts.
Integration of Knowledge: The harmonization of traditional Islamic values with contemporary sciences, modern philosophies, and digital technologies.
Digital Transformation in Education: The application of Educational Technology, offline-first learning architectures, and lightweight/interpretable Artificial Intelligence (Plain AI) or Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) in Islamic learning environments.
Institutional Governance & Policy: Deep analytical discourse on educational policies, management, and leadership in formal and non-formal institutional frameworks, including madrasahs and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren).
Community and Social Impact: Sharia-based economic education, community empowerment through educational institutions, and addressing global challenges facing Muslim societies.

2. Peer Review Process

All research articles submitted to JIER undergo a rigorous review process to ensure academic excellence and relevance:

Initial Screening: Every submitted manuscript is first reviewed by the editorial team for compliance with the journal’s focus, scope, formatting guidelines, and basic methodological soundness.
Plagiarism Check: Manuscripts are screened for plagiarism using Turnitin. Submissions with a similarity index exceeding 20% will be rejected immediately or sent back for revision.
Double-Blind Review: Manuscripts that pass the initial screening are sent to at least two independent peer reviewers who are experts in the respective field. The review process is entirely anonymous (the reviewers do not know the author's identity, and vice versa).
Final Decision: Based on the reviewers' recommendations, the Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision: Accept Submission, Revisions Required (Minor/Major), Resubmit for Review, or Decline Submission.

3. Open Access Policy

JIER provides immediate Open Access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

All articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0).
Readers are permitted to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author, provided the original work is properly cited.

4. Publication Ethics & Malpractice Statement

JIER is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and follows the principles outlined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Authorship: Authors must ensure that the manuscript is entirely their original work. Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Concurrent submission of the same manuscript to more than one journal is strictly unacceptable.
Reviewer Responsibilities: Reviewers must treat manuscripts as confidential documents. Reviews should be conducted objectively, with clear supporting arguments and no personal criticism.
Editorial Responsibilities: Editors evaluate manuscripts exclusively on the basis of their academic merit and relevance to the journal's scope, without regard to the authors' race, gender, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, or citizenship.

5. Screening for Plagiarism

To maintain strict academic integrity, JIER enforces a zero-tolerance policy toward plagiarism. Every manuscript submitted to the system is checked using Turnitin software before being sent to reviewers. If text recycling, self-plagiarism, or uncredited copying is detected at any stage of the publication process, the editorial board reserves the right to reject the paper immediately.

6. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy in Writing

In alignment with modern academic publishing standards, JIER outlines strict rules regarding the use of Generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) in manuscript preparation:

AI tools cannot be listed as an author or co-author on any paper.
Authors may use AI tools solely to improve the readability, grammar, or language phrasing of their manuscript.
The use of AI must not replace critical authorial tasks, such as formulating research conclusions, interpreting empirical data, or conducting original synthesis.
Authors must explicitly disclose the use of AI tools within their acknowledgment section or cover letter if it significantly shaped the manuscript’s preparation.

7. Archiving Policy

To ensure the long-term preservation of and perpetual access to the scholarly research published in JIER, all published issues are digitally archived. The journal utilizes the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) and CLOCKSS systems to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries, allowing those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration.
