RECONTEXTUALIZING IJARAH IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY: A HADITH PERSPECTIVE ON MODERN SERVICE TRANSACTIONS

This study examines the concept of ijarah (leasing and wages) through the perspective of the prophetic traditions (hadiths) of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and analyzes its contemporary relevance to modern service transaction practices. Utilizing a library research method alongside a thematic approach (mawdhu'i) to economic hadiths, this study identifies three primary dimensions of ijarah from the hadith perspective: first, the normative foundation establishing the legitimacy of the ijarah contract; second, the principles of justice in determining ujrah (wages/rent); and third, the mutual rights and obligations of the contracting parties. The findings demonstrate that the principles of ijarah derived from the hadiths remain substantially relevant to various forms of contemporary service transactions, including digital economy platforms, the gig economy, outsourcing, and application-based services. The prophetic tradition commanding the payment of a worker’s wages before their sweat dries manifests a universal and timeless value of justice and labor rights protection. Consequently, this study recommends integrating the ijarah values found in hadiths into labor policies and digital economy regulations in Indonesia
