Abstract

The Abbasid era, particularly through the establishment of Bayt al-Hikmah (House of Wisdom) in Baghdad, represents the pinnacle of the Islamic Golden Age. While extensive literature has documented its historical achievements, contemporary discourse often overlooks the precise epistemological mechanisms that enabled such unprecedented scientific breakthroughs. This study aims to analyze how "epistemological openness" defined as the systematic integration of revelation, human reason, and foreign scientific traditions—catalyzed the advancement of science during this period, and to draw critical lessons for modern educational and scientific frameworks. Utilizing a qualitative historical-philosophical approach and content analysis, this research examines primary historical records of translation movements alongside the philosophical works of key Abbasid scholars, including Al-Khwarizmi, Al-Kindi, and early translators. Results: The findings indicate that the scientific leaps in the Abbasid Era were not accidental but the result of a deliberate, state-supported epistemological framework. Bayt al-Hikmah operated on three pillars: a non-dichotomous view of knowledge that harmonized sacred and profane sciences, massive cross-cultural translation projects (Hellenistic, Persian, and Indian), and an inclusive intellectual climate that transcended sectarian and religious boundaries. Implications: This study argues that the decline of later Islamic scientific vigor correlates with a shift toward epistemological insularity. The lesson for contemporary institutions is clear: true scientific advancement requires an epistemological paradigm that fosters critical inquiry, intellectual pluralism, and global knowledge integration, rather than a rigid separation of values and science.
